In an interview with Vice News, the head of the National Agricultural Research Service, Steve Johnson, said the global agricultural sector is in trouble.
He said that while it is important to focus on global warming, climate change is the main challenge facing the world.
Johnson noted that farmers will face more severe challenges in the coming decades, including drought, rising sea levels and increased crop losses due to pests.
He called the current global economic crisis the “worst thing we’ve ever seen.”
Johnson said that in the United States, a lot of farmers are in a “very tough spot” due to the drought.
He noted that some are using drought relief funds to buy water from wells, which can cause shortages and lead to more damage to crops.
The National Agricultural Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) covers farmers in some areas of the United Sates.
Johnson also warned that there are still millions of people living in extreme poverty in the developing world, and that those who can afford to spend money on solar panels or wind turbines can still afford to have solar panels on their roofs.
He added that solar power is a way for those in the U.S. to reduce their carbon footprint.
Johnson also discussed the fact that a lot more crops are dying, and said that the amount of water needed to grow crops in the future is likely to be much higher than what is being produced now.
He explained that we have more land available than we can grow crops, and the water we can produce from that land is very expensive.
“We’re talking about millions of acres of land,” he said.
He added that the cost of water is a major issue in the global food system.
He cited the growing demand for water and the global flood risk, as well as a rising risk of water shortages.
The World Bank, Johnson said, has estimated that the global average cost of irrigation is $1,300 per acre, or $2,200 per acre for irrigated land.
If the global water crisis continues, that will put an even greater burden on farmers in developing countries, which in turn will drive up food prices in the developed world.
To help farmers cope, the National Farmers Union has released a report that looks at how water can be saved, and suggests how to best deal with the current drought situation.
The report comes after the United Nations warned of a massive water shortage that is threatening millions of farmers around the world, particularly in Africa.
