More than half of the states surveyed in the pollinators’ report are working on new policies to protect bees, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center.
The pollinators report, which was released on Thursday, comes as federal officials announced they will start a review of bee protection policies to ensure bee populations are maintained.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the U.N. International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) will release a report next year detailing what protections are needed to protect the bees.
A coalition of pollinator-focused groups called Save Our Pollinators released a statement calling for the EPA to “reconsider” bee protections.
“This is a wake-up call that the EPA has failed the bees, and the next EPA director must follow this lead,” the coalition said.
The EPA, which oversees bees, has previously said it will not review bee protection laws and regulations until after the new year.
